Research profile and key clinical specialties

I am a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals and a Principal Investigator at Newcastle University.

I have a specialist interest in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, the two major forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

I am the lead author for the British guidelines for the management of IBD (see publication below).

My research focuses on precision medicine, which investigates how to choose the best drug for individual patients at the right time in their disease course.

As part of this interest I study therapeutic development and repurposing of existing treatments in the context of mucosal immunity and host-microbial interactions (a recent paper in this field is below).

A previous Wellcome Trust PhD Fellow I completed an NIHR Clinical Lecturership in 2019 after which I became a Clinical Intermediate Fellow.

I am the Chief Investigator of the national IBD-RESPONSE programme funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Helmsley Charitable Trust, a study that will build a multi-omic predictive model of responsiveness to immune modifying therapy based on the gut microbiome, metabonome and human genome.
