Research profile and key clinical specialties

My research focuses on harnessing the immune system to treat solid malignancies, optimising the efficacy and delivery of immunotherapies to tumours, and understanding the immunological effects of cancer therapies, with a particular focus on oncolytic viruses.

Research in my group includes pre-clinical laboratory conceptualisation and optimisation, early phase clinical trials, and translational studies using clinical trial samples.

Two key publications

  • Samson A, Bentham MJ, Scott K, et al. 2018. Oncolytic reovirus as a combined antiviral and anti-tumour agent for the treatment of liver cancer. Gut. 67(3), pp. 562-573
  • Samson A, Scott KJ, Taggart D, et al. 2018. Intravenous delivery of oncolytic reovirus to brain tumor patients immunologically primes for subsequent checkpoint blockade. Science Translational Medicine. 10(422)

Possible PhD projects

  • Oncolytic viruses to sensitise otherwise immunotherapy-resistant tumours to immune checkpoint blockade.

More information

I have held four personal fellowships with CRUK, NIHR, YCR and my current Clinician Scientist award. I supervise both clinical and non-clinical PhD students in my laboratory.
